Moondance Diner Set To Re-Open In Wyoming
The grill will soon be sizzling and the coffee will be flowing at the Moondance diner, but to get a bite, New Yorkers will have to book a cross-country flight.
The diner was uprooted last year and placed onto a flat bed, which then trekked 2,400 miles to its new home in LaBarge, Wyoming.
The diner's owner says renovation work is on schedule for a June opening, despite a January snow storm that caused the roof and some of its walls to collapse.
The Moondance Diner, formerly called the Holland Tunnel Diner, retains several
original &/or distinctive elements; chrome detailing, a barrel roof
ceiling, wrap-around windows, counter & stools, as well as a famed
retro revolving moon sign by the late architect/designer Alan
Buchsbaum & designer/signmaker Jim Rogers.
Before taking the road trip out west, the Moondance Diner spent nearly 80 years by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel.
The Moondance Diner's incandescent, crescent-shaped sign was a beacon for hungry visitors roaming north of Canal Street amid a Hopper-esque landscape not far from the mouth of the Holland Tunnel. The late-night watering hole has appeared in episodes of "Friends" and "Sex and the City," and it was where Peter Parker's girlfriend, Mary Jane, played by Kirsten Dunst, waited tables in the 2002 film "Spider-Man." In real life, playwright Jonathan Larson ("Rent") worked at the diner.
"There are not going to be any more diners," the owner of Moondance Diner, Sunil "Sunny" Sharma, said last year before it shut down business in NYC. Inside the narrow restaurant, black-and-white photos of Yankees stars greeted customers who came to enjoy milkshakes, handcut fries, homemade buttermilk onion rings, and burgers. The food was priced a bit higher than one might expect at a diner: Cole slaw was $2.95.
"Well, it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'neath the cover of October skies."
