The Vatican hosted an unprecedented concert by the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra that was attended by Pope Benedict. The concert included a performance of Mozart's "Requiem".

Benedict has made improving relations with China a major goal of his pontificate. He issued an open letter in June saying he sought to restore full diplomatic ties with China that were severed two years after the 1949 Communist takeover.

The Pope also took the occasion to greet the Chinese people as they get ready for the Beijing Olympic Games, an event that he defined as, "of great importance for the entire human family."
